HOW MUCH WILL MY BATH REMODEL COST?
This is usually one of the first questions anyone asks when researching bathroom remodeling options.
The question of cost is tough to answer initially because bath remodels contain many complex variables and options, no matter what size your bathroom is. It’s difficult to know the exact cost until you’ve worked through the design process to establish exactly what you want and what is required to bring your new bathroom to life. Working with industry professionals is key to fully fleshing out the components of your bath project.
Most full bath remodels in the Midwest will range from $25,000 – $95,000+ in 2023. Until every single detail is designed, specified (like tile, plumbing fixtures & accessories, cabinetry, hardware, lighting, shower glass, etc), and priced by each and every industry professional involved (think demo, framing, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, installation, drywall, paint, etc.), a real project estimate cannot be 100% accurate.
Our team at Advance Design strives to educate every homeowner we meet with. We do our best to offer realistic investment ranges based on current bath remodels in the field and past projects of similar size and scope to yours.
It’s important to remember that any estimate or range you receive for your bathroom or any other space you are considering remodeling, is just that; an estimate. Prices can (and often do) vary drastically depending on your material selections, the scope of work, the process behind the team you partner with, and many other factors. As a design-build firm, our investment ranges are based on a full design-through-build model and include all materials and labor. If you are working with a “design only” or “construction only” team, these ranges may look different depending on the comprehensive services each team is (or is not) offering.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BATH REMODELS?
There are three main types of baths that homeowners remodel: powder rooms, hall baths, and primary/master baths. Each of these can include different scopes of work, customizations, and investment ranges.
Most powder room remodels cost around $7,000 – $16,000 upfront. Hall bath remodels run between $25,000 – $39,000 upfront. Full primary bath remodels cost around $40,000 – $95,000+ upfront.
Regardless of the size of your bathroom, each bath remodel includes a few of the same basic components that largely make up the cost of a bath remodel. The above ranges refer to complete bath remodels, not partials or minimal updates like solely replacing a vanity or changing shower tile. For those services, you may want to find a handyman team who is equipped to effectively replace partial areas within an existing space.
HOW MUCH DOES A POWDER ROOM COST?
Most powder rooms cost $7,000 – $16,000+ to complete.
The powder room is typically a small, often windowless bathroom that is typically located on the main level of a home near an entrance or common area. While it may be the smallest bathroom in your home, it is often the one guests utilize the most- which means it’s definitely worth remodeling! Investing in a powder room remodel is the most cost-effective bath renovation, as they are often simpler than larger bath spaces, and plumbing fixtures aren’t often rearranged as these spaces are usually small and narrow. Remodeling your powder room is a fantastic opportunity to play with color or pattern in a way that isn’t as easily achieved in larger bathrooms.
HOW MUCH DOES A HALL BATHROOM COST?
Most hall bathrooms cost $25,000 – $39,000+ to complete.
A hall bathroom is often located in a hallway or corridor and is shared by multiple people – like children or guests. They offer more storage than a powder room, as well as a shower or bathtub (or combo). Size-wise, they fall somewhere in between a master bathroom and a powder room depending on the home. Plumbing relocation is possible, but most homeowners keep to a similar layout of their hall bath when remodeling as they are often longer and narrower than master bathrooms.
HOW MUCH DOES A PRIMARY MASTER BATHROOM COST?
Most primary bath remodels cost around $45,000 – $100,000+ to complete.
If you’re ready to invest in your own home spa, a full custom primary bath remodel may be the best fit for you.
Full custom master bath remodels often include major layout reworking of plumbing and electrical layouts, which require specialty trades. Walls may be removed or added if needed to maximize layouts. Primary baths are an ideal opportunity to add custom spa-like elements that will make mornings and evenings more relaxing, such as heated floors, towel warmers, mirror TVs, and more.
HOW MUCH RESALE VALUE DOES A BATHROOM REMODEL ADD?
While many of our clients remodel with the main goal of creating long-term spaces to enjoy, eventual resale value is a smart thing to consider as you plan your project. Remodeling Magazine’s Cost Vs Value Report found that bath remodels in Chicagoland can add between 35%-65% of the total investment to the home’s value by year-end, depending on the scope.
WHAT INCREASES THE COST OF A BATHROOM REMODEL?
There are many, many elements that go into the total cost of a bath remodel. While every inch of your bath makes up a piece of the “remodeling pie”, there are a few common factors that elevate the total cost of your bath remodel.
- SIZE AND SCOPE
- CABINETRY
- TILE
- FIXTURES
- SKILLED LABOR
- STRUCTURAL CHANGES
