Home additions come in many shapes and sizes, and the homeowners we work with have shared a wealth of reasons for adding to their homes. Some need more room for their young families to grow, some have in-laws coming to live with them, and some want to enjoy more outdoor living space. For Jill and John in Hawthorn Woods, planning their addition project was a big part of their future. Family friends were starting to age in place by downsizing after their kids were grown, but less square footage wasn’t a goal the couple had in mind as they thought about the future.
REMODEL TOUR: SUNROOM ADDITION
As they thought about where they wanted to live long-term, they knew they wanted to stay in their beautiful neighborhood. With their hearts set on location, it became clear it was time to address square footage. They felt their home lacked a calm space to sit and relax, alone or with family. They partnered with Advance Design to design and build the future-proof solution: a single-story sunroom addition on the back of their existing home.
DESIGN WISHLIST
The backyard boasts beautiful views, and while they love spending time outside, Jill and John wanted a permanent room addition instead of a screen porch or a 3-season room.
The ADS team partnered with them to finalize plans for a sunny sitting room, designed to feel timeless and cozy.
Jill wanted the new room’s design to feel updated without clashing with the design of the rest of the home, which was built in 1987 but recently renovated. She wanted a bright material mix that felt timeless, complemented by walls of windows. The window placement is at the heart of this addition’s design, as natural lighting was a priority for the homeowners during the design phase.
INTERIOR FAVORITES
Jill and John love spending time in their new sunroom. They curated their brand new space to feel inviting, fitted with a cozy seating area and a dining area. The addition is located just off the kitchen and is a beautiful overflow option for hosting friends and family. The vaulted shiplap ceiling makes this room feel even more airy; Jill particularly loves how the chandelier looks suspended from above.
The spacious room is designed to encourage conversation and mindfulness, as reflected by our clients’ thoughtful choice to hang art between the windows rather than a television.
SEAMLESS TRANSITIONS
One element that should be carefully considered in any home addition is the tie-in and associated re-work that will be required to the existing structure. It’s crucial to make sure that every point of contact is sound and secure from the foundation up. Each addition’s tie-in will be different, depending on where the addition will connect to your home.
To ensure this new addition blended seamlessly with the original structure, the couple opted to have their whole home re-sided as the addition was finishing. The window trim and gutters also match throughout. Whether you’re standing on the street or sitting by the fire on the patio, the new addition looks as if it has always been part of this home.
Don’t overlook the impact of your landscaping when planning an addition. Investing in complementary perennials, trees, hardscaping, and lighting is worth the time, and can create a stunning showcase for your home.
