Andrew and Heather were looking to transform their existing master bath into a spa-like haven. Their existing bath was cramped and lacked the relaxing atmosphere they were dreaming of. Having already remodeled multiple spaces in their Kildeer home with Advance Design, they knew exactly who to call for their master bath project.
“For us, the ease of the process and good communication were important. There was less stress in the whole process knowing Advance Design could design it, build it, and handle everything else,” said Andrew.
The Redesign Process
Function and aesthetic were two priorities for the couple as they worked with Advance Lead Designer Claudia to redesign their bath. Their current bathroom did not reflect their personal style or needs. A freestanding tub was at the top of Heather’s wishlist, but the existing footprint of the bathroom was too small to comfortably incorporate one.
Aesthetically speaking, the couple wanted their new bath to feel like a glamorous home spa to relax and get away from it all without leaving home. They were looking for a design that blended their functional everyday needs with warm tones and spa-like features.
The initial redesign process centered around maximizing every inch of square footage. To expand the bathroom footprint, Claudia utilized about five feet of unused closet space to push the shower back and make room for a freestanding tub. She also included a vaulted ceiling in the redesign to make the space feel even more spacious. Andrew and Heather loved these ideas and were thrilled to see both a large shower and bathtub included in the 3D renderings from Advance Design’s team.
“The process was extremely collaborative. Every day we got an update on what was done, and we always felt knowledgeable about the project and never in the dark,” said Andrew.
To maximize the footprint of the shower and shower bench, the freestanding tub was placed just outside of the shower. In the early design stages, Heather mentioned that she loved the look of framed shower enclosures. With this in mind, Claudia included a custom grid-framed glass shower panel into the design. The black panels stretch from floor to ceiling for a dramatic first impression.
A Glamorous Spa Remodel
The glamorous new bathroom features many unique and intentional design details. The vaulted shiplap ceiling balances the natural texture and warmth of the double vanity, which features Dura Supreme cabinetry and white quartz countertops. The lower storage shelf provides ample storage without looking heavy or cramped. Gold Kohler bath fixtures and black hardware add a pop of color and contrast to the materials mix.
Heated hexagon tile floors add an extra element of spa-like luxury, making this the perfect space to unwind. The spacious shower features a rain shower, a large bench, and a pair of vertical niches with hexagonal tile details that match the shower floor. The black framed glass shower wall is one of Heather’s favorite elements in the new bath.
“With the overall size of the bathroom and shower we wanted to make more of a visual statement with a large double herringbone tile for the shower and bench. We ran the shower glass and the tile to the ceiling to make the space feel more open and grand. The mix of different metals and tiles create a really unique but cohesive flair,” Claudia said.
Besides being a relaxation haven for Andrew and Heather, the new master bath has created an unexpected benefit for their kids’ bath time routines. Andrew remarked that bath time in the past was a chore, but now their kids can’t wait for bath nights in the new tub and shower! Andrew and Heather are thrilled with their new bath and can’t wait to enjoy it for many years to come.
“We love how it turned out. We can close the world off now and have a truly relaxing spa. We love the darker walls, shower, and gold touches,” said Andrew.
